Jericho

"So the people shouted, and [the priests] blew with the horns. And it came to pass, when the people heard the sound of the horn, that the people shouted with a great shout, and the wall fell down flat, so that the people went up into the city, every man straight before him, and they took the city."
~Joshua 6:20

No no, I'm no Christian. Was just doing some self-research about this Jericho, I didn't even clearly know what it was about till just now. What sparked my interest in researching is that MJ band is playing Jericho by Bert Appermont for the NBC and at some point I didn't know what was going on.

I still don't quite understand la, I didn't find out who exactly Joshua is.

FYI, Jericho is a town in the West Bank, near the Jordan River.

So part 1 of the piece, "Years of Exile" was illustrating the cruel journey through the desert into Canaan. Emotional, with regards to the desire for a home and all. I don't know what is supposed to go on at this part of the story, like who is crossing to Canaan and whether this Canaan is anywhere near Jericho. Jericho is a town in the West Bank, near the Jordan River, by the way. I think Joshua was leading the Israelites to Canaan for protection, since he is going to bring down Jericho and did not want to harm the Israelites. Think so la.

Part 2, "The Battle of Jericho", is the part I understand best. It's about the Lord asking Joshua to conquer Jericho or something. I got this from Wikipedia:

The Lord spoke to Joshua telling him to march around the city once every day for six days with the seven priests carrying trumpets in front of the ark. On the seventh day they were to march around the city seven times and the priests were to blow their trumpets. This Joshua did and commanded his people not to give a warcry until he told them to do so. On the seventh day after marching around the city the seventh time the priests sounded their trumpets and Joshua ordered the people to shout.

So this is where the tom-tom and timpani got the solo during this part of the piece. The screaming part in the score was optional, but I thought we'd portray the story better if we did give warcries.

The walls of the city collapsed and the Israelites were able to charge straight into the city. The city was completely destroyed except for Rahab because she had hid the two spies sent by Joshua. She and all her family were spared. After this Joshua burned the remains of the city and cursed any man who would rebuild the city of Jericho at the cost of his firstborn son.

Yep and someone did rebuild the city at the cost of his firstborn son.

Part 3, "Victory" is a very very fluorishing part where we illustrate the expressions and feelings of Joshua and the Israelites when they won the city. Ms Sia said we should capture the hearts of the audience. Yes yes, we should.

Part 4, "Celebration". Well, of course you will be celebrating for your victory. This part is a lively Jewish dance so....dance!

Oh do you know that Bert Appermont is a young guy? He's born in 1973 la. Super young. And he composed pieces like Noah's Ark and Jericho. Great guy, he is.

You can read the whole thing if you have the Bible. In the Book of Joshua.
