Finlandia

This piece was composed by Jean Sibelius in 1899-1900 and some of you may have heard of it before. Many different versions of lyrics were put into the melody and they become very meaningful songs.

If you just want to hear the choir just fast forward to 05:26. And check out the actual size of the choir!

What made me think should be the first version is actually Finland's 2nd national anthem, though many insist that it's the first. The reason why they couldn't make it their national anthem is because sooooo many different versions of it have appeared and it's so hard to eradicate it.

I think that's fine, because the lyrics are really beautiful. They talk about the world, they talk about peace, they talk about homes. Such selflessness in the lyrics.

1. Finlandia (literal translation, so may not be close to the melody)

Finland, behold, thy daylight now is dawning,
the threat of night has now been driven away.
The skylark calls across the light of morning,
the blue of heaven lets it have its way,
and now the day the powers of night is scorning:
thy daylight dawns, O Finland of ours!

Finland, arise, and raise towards the highest
thy head now crowned with mighty memory.
Finland, arise, for to the world thou criest
that thou hast thrown off thy slavery,
beneath oppression´s yoke thou never liest.
Thy morning´s come, O Finland of ours!

2. This is written in 1934

This is my song, Oh God of all the nations,
A song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes, my dreams, my sacred shrine.
But other hearts in other lands are beating,
With hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine.
But other lands have sunlight too and clover,
And skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
Oh hear my song, oh God of all the nations,
A song of peace for their land and for mine.

3. Another verse

When nations rage, and fears erupt coercive,
The drumbeats sound, invoking pious cause.
My neighbors rise, their stalwart hearts they offer,
The gavels drop, suspending rights and laws.
While others wield their swords with blind devotion;
For peace I'll stand, my true and steadfast cause.

4. And another

May truth and freedom come to every nation;
May peace abound where strife has raged so long;
That each may seek to love and build together,
A world united, righting every wrong;
A world united in its love for freedom,
Proclaiming peace together in one song.

Psst. NUSWS is going to play Finlandia at InTempo 2008, on the 15th of this month! Come come! =D

It hurts so much

Ethan fell off my parents' bed today by accident while my mum went to get his milk.

It's no one's fault, really, Ethan is just fond of flipping and flipping.

But it pains me to see him cry so hard.

=(

Sob.

New blog

No no, I'm not changing blogs haha.

I merely added a new blog to trace a route towards the coming summer. Nothing much now, but still feel free to have a look.

I love the skin. Muahaha.

Sigh.

It was easy to trust people.

Till the things they do to you take away your trust.

Like...at first they wanted, now they put their initial plans off.

I'm telling all of you, don't say things that you don't feel strongly for, or don't mean it, in case you cheat people of their feelings.

I'm telling you two, don't say things that you eventually won't do.
Because I'm hurt.

About leap years

There's been an upmeow (i.e. small uproar) about the film The Leap Years, based on a book written by local author Catherine Lim. Simply because of the song that you hear when you watch the trailer.

This is a clip of low-quality, but you still can hear the music.

Well it may sound familiar to you like how it sounded familiar to me the many times I saw this trailer on TVMobile.

Did a search (the Internet is power) and found that the soundtrack is actually 'Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence' composed by Ryuichi Sakamoto.

The music was actually used for a 1983 movie of the same name.

Based on a novel of the same name by Sir Laurens van der Post.

I searched the NLB and LINC catalogue but I couldn't find that book. Only the movie. I feel like reading the book, 'cos it is better than to watch the movie and stomach the seppuku scenes. *shivers*

Anyway. The point is, apparently the movie did not credit the soundtrack to Sakamoto, that explains the upmeow.

So that's somehow stealing other's intellectual property. It's more of an uproar to me actually. But many still seem to be oblivious to this. This is Raintree Pictures we're talking about! The music was credited to this Ricky Ho. Who's now a target of criticisms. I wonder who's at fault, really.

I'm still tempted to either read the book or catch the show though, some people are boycotting the movie.

My dad bought a spaceship for Ethan.

It is blue and has a steering wheel in front. Looks like a comfort cab to us. Somehow or the other.

A milestone in Ethan's life

According to the Lunar calendar, Ethan is four-months-old today. According to the Gregorian calendar, we have 4 days to go.

This means that Ethan can feed on slightly more solid stuff (like blended fruits and the jars of 'substance' you get at supermarkets) and not just milk, milk, and milk. And water.

It was pretty hilarious to see his expression when he tastes food that has never entered his mouth before.

First up, sugar. (spice, and everything nice)

See the remains of the sugar around his mouth

Next, chicken drumstick!!!

Oooh come to mummy
Eeyer what is this
MmmMmmMmmmm delicious

And then lollipop!

Yeay.

~~~~~
My dad picked me up from Redhill today and instead of bringing me straight to school, he drove me for a spin -_- He wanted to show me the highest pedestrian bridge(?) in Singapore which is still under construction. It's a looooong walk from the cable car station at Mount Faber all the way to...I don't know where that place is. Near Redhill. The following picture was taken around the Telok Blangah area.
Verrrryyy high up.
COOKIE MONSTERRRR! ❤
Oh my goodness my favourite Sesame Street character was interviewed by NPR. I don't know what's that. But still, watch!
Watch out for his favourite curse word! Hilarious.
And his signature actions etc. perked me up a lot!
Watch the video here.
COOOOKIEEEEEE!! URMMUMUMUMUM....
Problems
Problems. Nothing new in anyone's life.
Nothing new to me of course.
Looking through my blog I realised I haven't been talking about things deep inside my heart.
Probably I just want to hide them.
Last week was tumultuous, there were sooo many things to do after the CNY holiday. Work, interviews, band, property stuff. And tuition. Relationships.
It was one heck of a week.
I am still rather distressed by decisions made that I have no right of say, and I don't know what to expect.
Sigh.
Good news come together with bad news. I am appreciative of the opportunities offered to me...but with these I have to give up or sacrifice some things.
I pray this year will be smooth-sailing.
A carpenter's tool
This is amazing. The sound from the musical saw is like a woman's singing voice at some points. This performance is by the great musical saw player (musical sawist? Haha) David Weiss.
I think your ears have to be very sensitive to pitching to play this accurately and beautifully!
Of tutorials and nothing else
Prove, prove, prove.
Why is it so fun for others but not for me?
I don't see the beauty in it.
This is beauty:
Birthdays, birthdays and birthdays
This year I am turning 21.
I am dreading it, because at age 21 you have more responsibilities for yourself. And I don't like them.
Though I have more freedom...but doesn't mean I'll think wisely for all situations.
It's so scary.
It seemed I was just 17 yesterday (yea right, you were 20 years old yesterday).
Anyway.
I just came home from two birthday parties. I am sorry I missed band practice for this. And I was a bit disappointed with some changes, but we'll see.
Joan's was in the afternoon, and Evelyn's was in the evening.
Thank goodness they're all in the east.
I hope they like the presents we got them.
More about it when I more or less got the photos.
See you.
What their names mean
We've said names of cities like Bangkok, Baghdad, but do we know what they mean?
I don't know how accurate this is, but do look at this video.
Ah, and Singapore means Lion City. =D
Though we don't have wild lions roaming freely in town.
(note that they spelled capital wrongly in the video)
Chinese New Year
This is not late because we're still at the 3rd day of Chinese New Year.
So,
HAPPY NEW YEARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
=D
I have a card for all of you.
I've sent most of you already I hope, if you haven't (sorry!), here you are!! =D
Blow it up so you can see the details!
Hope that all of you (and myself!) be safe every year, have improvements in your studies, you get whatever you hope for, and everything will go well for you!!
I sounded weird? OK.
祝大家岁岁平安,学业进步,心想事成,事事顺利!
Makes sense? =)
Have a great year ahead!
Undergrad math lecturer
It was reported that this undergraduate from the math department of NUS is giving lectures on youtube!
This is on Bernoulli's equation.
It is said that this guy got rejected by top US universities though he got 4 As and two S-paper distinctions for his 'A' levels.
Oh well.
And he even has a website on himself and lectures of the math stuff.
........................
I just don't bother looking thru even one video.
I'm in love!
Just in time for Valentine's Day.
He came into my life in October last year, and he's been quite a dear.
Ahhhhhhh. He melts my heart!
