A few nights ago my mum came into my room and asked me to do some researching online.

For good diapers.

Can you believe it. =\

So I told her, well, it really depends on the kid himself, if the diaper is unsuitable, his skin will tell you that. So even if people rave over this brand of diapers it's no use if my nephew Ethan doesn't like it.

She said Ethan has been having some kind of rashes on his skin, and it also shows that the diaper was too tight.

So I asked her to get bigger ones.

She thought to herself, hmm, the biggest is XXL....

I asked her what size Ethan is wearing.

She said XXL.

I brought Ethan to preschool today, and had to get him off his pram. By doing that means I had to carry him up.

The teacher commented, wow you guys are great, you all are able to carry him.

I didn't know what to say.

Prawn risotto

One fine day when I went home and there was no dinner, I whipped up risotto - for the first time.

Heng it turned out well, there was no specific recipe to my tastes I could follow.

It was yummy! Hahaha. I'm gonna try with more ingredients next time. *rubs hands*

I know, I know, the colour isn't enticing.

But it's still nice okay. I only put four prawns for the entire serving which was enough for two.

I think I ate 1.5, my mum took the 0.5.

I busied myself in the kitchen yesterday for about 10 mins, sprucing up a really simple dish.

I still have the thyme sprigs lying around ma, so I went to look for recipes which used thyme.

And it was this marinated tomatoes dish. It wasn't exactly a recipe, it merely stated what was inside. So I put the ingredients in according to hweeling lo. And it turned out not bad, mum liked it.

I had the tomatoes with toasted baguette plus a smear of butter. YUMS.

I used cherry tomatoes, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, salt, pepper, brown sugar, thyme and garlic. Would love to put in green onions but I couldn't find them thus left them out. Leave the tomatoes in the fridge for at least four hours (I left them overnight).

But then again.

Maybe housewife isn't a correct term.

This is a song by Sodagreen called erm, No Sleep. It's a song in 台语, the native dialect in Taiwan or what Singaporeans will blatantly put it as - Hokkien. Though I think linguistics wise there are some differences in pronunciation.

Maybe the band lacked a better word but I thought 'Sleepless' would sound better. Or 'Insomnia'.

Anyway.

I got this from the YouTube page of the MV:

Sounds cheesy right. But the song is really simple and nice.

I did some work last night (since I'm like a full-time house-daughter) and translated the lyrics the best I can. It was quite tough because I don't understand the dialect well in words! And how to pronounce too. Don't blame me if you still can't speak the words! I do not know phonetics well and doubt that all my readers know too. HAHA.

Hope this can help you people understand the song better! But there are parts that I still don't understand too. Ha.

Roast chicken.

I'm officially unemployed for 4 months, unofficially unemployed for 6. Oh gawd. Maybe I didn't try hard enough.

I shall look into the official unemployment for some comfort for a while.

Anyway.

Since I had time on hand.

I made roast chicken.

Time spent in the oven was around two hours, when the recipe said 1 hr + 30 to 40 mins will do. The chicken just wasn't cooked thru enough.

And my oven was too small. =(

Small oven equals to lower heat and longer time taken when you are roasting a big batch of food. And I didn't have a roasting pan of the correct size too. Time to do some kitchen shopping.

As you can see here, the chicken was very near the roof of the oven.

After.

This picture was taken the first time I took it out. It spent more time in the oven after that.

And the chao tah part was due to close proximity to the heating elements of the oven. Kinda sian about that.

But guess what.

It was damn nice lo. Seriously.

My family was raving about it, and we polished the entire dish clean.

No la, except for the onions and bell pepper and chicken bones.

Even my mum asked me to do it again some time.

Yeayyy.

Recipe from here but I changed a little stuff here and there.

And if anyone I know here needs a bunch of fresh thyme, they can get from me. I don't know what to do with the remaining bunch I have.

I'm sure you know of people who are not very well-liked in general, because they have irritating/weird behaviours.

Sometimes I take pity on them, and talk to them to make them feel more accepted in the social sense.

However most of the time, being nice can backfire.

It is hard to satisfy the human mind, when we have something, instead of counting ourselves lucky for it we tend to mourn over what we do not have.

That's quite the same for me.

Now I don't have a serious daily business to see to. No school, no job.

I'm unemployed. (as I say this, I still write my occupation as 'fresh graduate' whenever I need to fill up something. HAHA. 死爱面子, what to do.)

People around me kept asking me about my job search, I'm ALWAYS greeted by the same questions, sometimes from the same people I have to meet once a month, and I really am kinda irritated about it. If I'm employed I'll let you know okay, quit asking. Why not be more concerned about other aspects of my life?

Now I'm at the low morale and procrastinating stage. Maybe due to zero replies. =\

Anyway. If people don't ask about my jobhunt, they ask if I prefer to be in school or at work (I did temp). I'd reply I prefer the life of the unemployed.

Which is true, because you get to do what you want within your monetary limits, instead of having a lot of money and not having the time to do what you want to do. And since junior college I've never really enjoyed school life. The academic part, that is.

However in this day and age, I have to get a job, no money's gonna drop down from the sky. Savings will deplete, you know. Parents are not there to feed you throughout their entire lives.

As much as I like unemployment, I have to face reality.

Sleeping in's are simple but helpful.

I wanna sleep into the afternoon.

But it is no longer practical to do that =(

I am temporary working at some office/call centre that provides yummy overtime remuneration. So whenever I can, I do OT. That's probably 12 hours three times a week, plus travelling, probably 14. Ten hours left per day in my life, half of it goes to dinner and slack and the computer and folks and the gentlemanfriend. The other two weekday nights that I don't OT are set aside for band practices. This is about 14 hours two times a week, plus travelling, 16.5 hours. 7.5 hours per day left. I don't even have a lot of time for sleep.

Saturdays I have to wake up early for driving lessons, come next week onwards, it'd be both Sat and Sun that I have to wake up early. Then weekends there'd be catching up to do etc., when I reach home it's usually quite late.

My room is extremely messy and my wardrobe needs more tender loving care.

There are photos that I wanna upload but too lazy to do so.

I grumble when I have to add water to myherbgarden because it was taking up my sleep time. (However when I see them grow prettily I tend to forget all the angst.)

I have to get a job and have to apply for them. But by the time I get home, I'd be really tired. So applications have been running low. Don't ask me about my job search, 'cos that might be the 1000th time I've answered that question, thank you very much. I have to answer that question to almost everyone I meet along the way. So now you get it, just keep quiet.

It is also a time management thing.

But I can't just work and have no life!

I have dark rings around my already dark face. If I add a scar in the shape of a moon between my eyebrows, I can get a job as a judge. If you don't get it, never mind.

Olive oil bread.

It actually is not called olive oil bread.

I made it up myself. HAHA.

Because I used olive oil instead of butter. Healthier choice, you see.

Thing is, the bread was supposed to look like this.

Please pardon me, I didn't have a French oven, nor did I really follow instructions.

At least mine turned out to look like a normal loaf right =Þ

If I ever wanna try it out again next time, probably I'll be good and use butter.

The guy used a mixer to mix the dough for ten minutes, I didn't have a stand-up mixer, and I kneaded the dough till I sweated all over for twenty minutes and still didn't achieve the effect that he wanted.

And then I gave up =(

Maybe I should go to the Community Centre to take up bread-baking sessions.

Then it was banana walnut muffins.

I did this twice, the first time was better. I don't know what went wrong. Maybe the bananas weren't as fragrant as the first time, or I over mixed for the second time.

Well at least I know I am guilty of the latter.

These photos were from the first try. I thought I was pro enough to ignore the second time. Well at least the difference was in the taste la, not so much of looks.

So in here there were flour and bananas and walnuts and cinnamon etc.

Preheat the oven.

Put them into muffin cups.

I decided to make it fancier by placing a piece of walnut on top of each muffin.

I later realised it was a mistake. HAHA.

You see, it was too hot for the nuts to bear and they got kinda scorched.

But the taste was quite nice and texture was perfect =)

Oh, it just lacked some banana taste.

Do you have any recommendations what bananas to use?

Yummmmmm.

But the second time was no goooooood. =\

Okay, I finally caught up with what I wanted to blog all along haha.

I don't mean really old old long ago, but probably just within the past few months.

I cooked. What's new.

And I didn't put them up immediately because I don't know if anyone will be interested to see them.

But since I have nothing much to blog about - oh I'm quite enjoying my temp job, that's all - I think I'll bring the pictures out of their folders.

First up.

Spicy Orange Shrimp. I got this recipe from PW/Pastor Ryan. I think.

Peel and de-vein prawns. Shrimp. Whatever.

Then add some butter to the pan.

In the meantime, mix orange juice, garlic and some herbs and spices together.

Sear the prawns.

I honestly don't know if what I did was called 'searing'. I doubt so though.

I think it was more of, pan-fry and cook 'em.

So when the prawns are done, take them out and put aside.

Add the juice mixture into the pan with the prawny flavours.

Let them simmer but not cool down.

When the sauce begins to thicken (I added a little flour), bring the prawns in and stir fry a bit.

And you're done!

This is somewhat like the kind of biscuits at Popeye's Chicken, just that this one has got more flavour.

I went to Cold Storage at Tampines 1 thinking that there'll definitely be sundried tomatoes, since it's a kind of ang moh supermarket, surely it'll store such produce.

In the end, after searching high and low and asking the staff for assistance, there was no sundried tomatoes at Cold Storage.

No.

Zero.

And guess where I found the prized (and also expensive) bottle?

NTUC.

But anyway. Chop up some garlic and onion.

Measure out some bisquick.

Here.

Add the ingredients together.

Put them on baking paper.

Please be careful while taking them out.

You might be as stupid as me.

That's a burn mark, if you're asking.

But as of today it has completely healed.

They turned out to be quite yummy, albeit kinda salty. =Þ

However no one in my family fancied it. =(

And I made a sundried tomato pasta salad with the remaining sundried tomatoes.

I don't even have such honours attached to my degree.

So I read the email at 1 a.m. on Wednesday (today), the script is due in the evening, and I have a temp job which starts on Thursday morning.

Things were being thrown at me today. Firstly in the morning an agent called me regarding a $6.50/hr reception job in Marine Parade.

Thank goodness I rejected that one, because at 2 p.m. she called me to inform me of a better job offer.

This time, I was supposed to reach her office by 1430 so that I can make it for the interview which was at 3. Of course this meant cab fares that went unclaimed.

Because there was nowhere that I could claim from.

And then the interview ended at 4 plus, I went to town. At 5 plus she called to inform me that I got the job. And I was told to head down to the branch in town to sign the contract. That was like, immediately?

Then I came home and saw the email.

Everything has got to come together at the same time.

I hope the job that I really want will call later.

Like, next week, so that I know my schedule and it's easier for me to settle stuff.

I'm hoping and hoping that the temp job will be nice enough so that I won't be missing band practices. And especially the September 13 performance itself.

What happened was this guy was travelling with his band by United Airlines and they broke his guitar. He tried to get them to settle this for the past year but there was no way he could get compensation. And he promised the last UA officer that he'd write three songs about this.

Instead of showing a very angry video I think this is quite light-hearted actually, and brings a little laugh too.

As for Hai Sing Catholic School, a trainee teacher attached to the school tested positive for the H1N1 virus on June 27. He attended a staff seminar on the morning of June 25 and six staff who were in close contact have been asked to take Leave of Absence from June 26 to July 2.

As only a small percentage of the school staff is on Leave of Absence, the school will operate as usual and reopen on Monday, June 29.

=S I still think they shouldn't open that soon. Maybe like, next week? In any way someone in the school was infected ma, who knows on Day 1 several kids might be infected. Scarly they never wash the school properly. =SSS

Okay the thing is I took photos of the mee goreng (which was not spicy at all, to my dismay).

I totally forgot I sorted them in the food folder already.

Alrights, this food porn post will be a minor one. It's not something that I can stop and take photos of because I was afraid the noodles will get charred. It just carries on, you know.

And it was kinda my first time with a wok without my mum around. She went to Malacca for that weekend.

The recipe called for me to cook the noodles first.

I think that was a mistake because the noodles were too soggy in the end. Mee goreng isn't supposed to be soggy you know.

Here's the sauce that goes into the noodles.

And egg. Only two eggs left in the fridge, when I was hoping for an egg for each person. Too bad. It was really short on the eggs.

Heat up the wok.

And a series of events happened. This was what I got thereafter.

Looks like Chinese fried noodles right. 福建面。

But tasteless, that's all. I hadn't put the sauce mixture in.

Fry fry fry.

Sauce in.

Stir stir stir.

Pardon the cabbage haha.

Totally unlike the mee goreng I know. The recipe I got was from a Malaysian blog. And I wonder if I added the wrong kind of chilli sauce.

Heh. I'm so glad I finally got to cook after many weeks. This was on the 30th.

Spaghetti Bolognese.

It started with my brother's SMS in the morning if I wanted breakfast. I called him and he said he was at the pasta isle of the supermarket. Then he asked if I was gonna have lunch at home. I said yes. He said he'll buy the pasta.

And I cook.

Like. Thanks.

He did buy the pasta but of course I needed ingredients so I went down myself anyway.

Finally I got myself a bottle of olive oil. 1 litre at around SGD 15. The 500ml one was nearly ten bucks, so I crossed my fingers and bought the 1 litre one, hoping that that won't be too much.

OK I admit that I got to know this brand via Little Nyonya.

Anyway, here goes.

Heat the olive oil.

Then the carrots and onions. Cook cook cook.

When they're about done add in the minced meat. I was supposed to use beef but I got pork instead.

Cook cook cook. Until the meat is cooked.

Spices. I didn't have any fresh ones.

Maybe I should start planting.

Tomato paste.

Red wine. Yummmmmmmy.

Canned whole tomatoes.

In.

And some other things which I didn't take photos of.

Oh there was milk and Worcestershire too.

Done. Looks a little like curry cos of the milk. Haha.

And this is how it looks like after simmering for an hour.

All I could answer is, muffins are bread and cupcakes are cakes. Duh, if not cupbread meh.

I think the meaning would be more explicit if we know muffins by calling them cupbread. Because the word 'muffin' doesn't tell you much unless you know what it means.

But if you really think about it, cakes and breads are kind of similar. (we can have sweet breads too ma, not only savoury)

And so I did.

I cooked today. Muahaha. Made me so happy.

I cooked meatballs, recipe from PW. I chose hers today (and not Jamie Oliver or Kayotic etc.) because I don't have those spices that other recipes require. The nearest supermarket is poorly stocked when it comes to spices like basil and rosemary, so I decided to do away with those and work on a recipe that didn't require any.

I think I'll like the recipes with more spices better. Anyway, here goes!

Finely chop the onion.

I chop until damn swee right. WHAHA.

Airpork.

I really wanted to dig the white parts out but stopped myself because that would be never ending. I just hope that the chopping board and mincer and whatever else they used to make this portion of $2.80 ground pork possible is clean.

The pork was on special offer. My mum said it could be because of swine flu so people don't wanna eat. =S Oh no.

Oh and this recipe calls for beef but I can't cook beef at home, so I subsituted that with pork.

Anyway, in went the oats. This recipe uses oats instead of breadcrumbs/crackers.

Got milk also.

Onion.

Salt.

The black pepper. One of my good friends in the kitchen.

Done with all the ingredients! Now is to mix them all together.

Ah!

Before that, make sure you wash your hands. Swine flu you know. Hahhahaahhaa.

Okay I know it must be the angle. *self consolation*

Anyway, here's the result. Reminds me of ngoh hiang before I put the meat into the beancurd skin. But of course, of a very different aroma.

I then scooped them out by the tablespoon and rolled them into medium sized balls.

Did someone say balls?

I know these meat 'balls' aren't the roundest things on Earth, thank you very much.

Into the freezer for five minutes.

Then take them out and dredge them in flower. I mean flour.

Ta-daa.

Oil into the saucepan.

Ah, I later figured that I put too many for one batch.

There are 13 balls altogether by the way. How lucky.

Ok I know I don't have the nicest meatballs here but we're gonna eat them, so heck!

HAHA.

And here's them with the sauce poured over. The sauce is made up of ketchup, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, onion, ....and I can't remember already.

And the baking dishes at home are either too big or too small. I settled with too big.

Afterwards I sent them into the oven for forty minutes.

The recipe said 45, but I can't really bear to see more of the sauce drying up.

Verdict: I think it's quite nice, I was quite surprised by the taste because I thought it'd be quite normal. But I know I won't make it again. Mum only ate one, she said she doesn't like the sauce. Dad ate a few, he said that it's too sweet. Bro ate a few too, he said it's not bad.I ate a lot. Shit.

Hmmm. April 3. Nearly a month ago. About the banana cake. And that post was nearly a month late. =(

Which implies that.....I haven't been doing what I like to do =(((((

Okay la, I've been actually, here and there, and really ugly comfort food.

I was alone at home one night and had to make my own dinner.

So I had coleslaw...

...some potato bake (or do you call it gratin?)..

...and vanilla ice-cream with fudge. Yikes, how sinful. No wonder I've been gaining pounds.

One fine day I baked muffins. Again. The very same ones. This time I baked them at a lower temperature. And they took longer to cook.

Any occurrences of waves splashing down like the ones in this post?

Nearly.

That makes zero! Muahaha. And the colours are more pleasant this time.

Yesterday when walking around Cold Storage with RC, I wanted to get a muffin mix of another brand so that I could bake today, but he didn't allow me to =( because I haven't finished exams ma. But in the end I still did cook and bake la =Þ more about it in the next post.

And then I made agar-agar. Mixed them with orange juice and realised I put in too little sugar so it was quite sour. It didn't help that I had it in the orange skins, and they got kind of bitter too. I'll try for more lovely flavours!

One breakfast I decided to make some kind of roll. French toast (I put lots of spices into that egg mix) and then rolled ham and cheese inside it. YUMMY. But quite messy cos got to roll.

I've heard of a similar case when I went to Bugis Street two years back, a shop assistant was telling me that she was 'hypnotised' by this group of Indian men (no racial discrimation, I'm just stating their race that's all) and while she was unconscious, they took the money in her pouch and fled.
